Buccal Fat Pads

A procedure that has been growing in popularity in recent years for its ability to refine the cheekbones and sharpen the jawline is buccal fat removal.

This procedure removes sections of fat, known as buccal fat pads, from the mid-cheek area, and reshapes the face to create a slimmer, contoured silhouette that features more prominent cheekbones without a trace of “baby fat” in sight.

Who is a good candidate for buccal fat removal

If you’re considering buccal fat removal, it’s important to know that some people are better candidates for the procedure than others. The ideal candidate is typically a person in their 20s to 40s who doesn’t smoke and has a full, round face that they would like to reshape and redefine.

Body weight is also a consideration. Patients whose weight falls above the recommended range may not see beneficial results from buccal fat removal since the shape of the face could be due to other factors than buccal fat pads.

It’s also important to think about the long-term when considering the procedure. Over time, our faces naturally lose volume and our cheeks naturally get somewhat hollower. This is why the procedure is generally not recommended for people in their 50s and older, as removing fat from the face at this age may enhance the effects of aging.

What to expect during a buccal fat removal procedure

The procedure generally takes about 30 minutes and is performed in your facial plastic surgeon’s office.

After administering anesthesia, your doctor will make incisions on the inside of your mouth in order to access the buccal fat pads and remove them. The procedure does not leave any visible scars.

After the procedure, some recovery time is required—usually about two weeks. During this time, you can go about your normal routine. However, while you are healing, you will be on a liquid diet and have a special mouthwash that helps prevent infection.

The results are visible right away and typically include a more defined face and jawline.
